How to Play a Game

Lords Mobile is a sport that ended up surprising me. Most of us know the saying about judging a book by its cover. Well I'm adding to that: not judge a game by its tutorial.

The programmer stocked the game's opening with the gamers repetitiously digging. There were a few moments at which I got to see a battle unfold, but each of them performed on their own with no direct involvement. Once those battle sections finished, it was right back into opening up a menu, hitting "upgrade," shutting the menu, and utilizing the free instant upgrade capability to complete the timer for that specific upgrade.

I had been stuck watching the large battles unfold by themselves.

The game led me in menu to menu, upgrading so many buildings that I stopped paying attention to the particulars and just went right for the "upgrade" button and then the "free" button to complete off the update. This type of job is typical (although to a lesser degree) in many mobile strategy games, but Lords Mobile has taken it to an extreme. One or two examples of how to instantly finish an update is good, but a dozen or so back-to-back is dull, and not as individual players than myself will check out of the game before they even get to play it.

Fortunately I stuck around and discovered Lords Mobile's saving grace: its own Hero battles.

If you paid attention throughout the large scale fight sequences at the beginning of the game, then you'll have discovered that the armies are led by hero units. Heroes can not just collect, but they are able to take their set of heroes on side quests that involve battling waves of enemies and strategically utilizing each hero's unique skills during battle.

Loot is used to upgrade the personalities' stats, and the personalities themselves can level up farther, permitting them to progress against enemy groups that were tougher, since the player levels up their accounts.

I was amazed by how much I enjoyed the hero manner, when minutes earlier I halfheartedly tapped away at menus.

Aim and the protagonist struggles taking place in real time, combined with the need to summon special abilities at essential moments, stands in stark contrast. Because the hero mode is merely a side attraction rather than the main focus (constructing a city to compete with other people in a multiplayer world), it is not a totally fleshed-out experience. But I was happy to play it, as it not only gave me an active part in combat (which is something the larger scale battles lacked), but since it didn't involve me mindlessly updating more buildings.

The rest of the match became busy-work once I discovered the hero mode. Before closing out of the game, I would check in with my city into undertake a few missions before jumping, and then check my city. I was probably supposed to be analyzing my defenses, checking out what my neighbors were around, and so on. However, I did not care about that. I've done that stuff in games prior to Lords Mobile that repeat and the familiarity held interest.
